Barenaked Disappointment

Picked up the Barenaked Ladies’ latest album, Everything to Everyone, today. I was listening to it while I worked, and I’m sad to say that this album was a big disappointment. It might be their worst album, even lower than Born on a Pirate Ship.

Why? Well, the album contains 14 songs, and about 10 of them are dreary ballads. Many of them, like “Next Time” and “Take it Outside” and “Celebrity” all sound like they’re about the same things. The only songs that seemed the least bit vibrant were “Upside Down” and “Second Best”, and even they weren’t quite as good as previous BNL fare. Once again, Ed Robertson has a silly #3 track, “Another Postcard”, but this one is extremely forced – like he’s trying to rehash “One Week” and failing.

I give it a 3/10. The only saving grace are the acoustic versions of a couple of the songs at the end of the disc, but the problem isn’t really the music – it’s the songwriting.
