DJTyrant gets his first Strike

Shayne challenges DJTyrant to Utopia (no Lifelines)
Shayne wins the song, 88.99 (+6 pts.) to 85.71 (0 pts.)
DJTyrant gets his second Strike and is eliminated
– SPOTLIGHT: After winning his first song earlier, it looked as if DJTyrant was going to win his second song here as he held the lead for much of the song. Unfortunately, a few stumbles during the “rhythmic” portion right after the middle run allowed Shayne to come from behind and take the victory, staving off elimination himself.

Mio challenges Hulk to Sunshine (80% Target added; player with the score closest to 80% wins)
Mio wins the song, 78.73 (1.27% off, +5 pts.) to 75.47 (4.53% off, 0 pts.)

Aram Fingal withdrew from the tournament due to injury when, during his compulsory dopple, his identicube was placed inside the HX368 computer for safekeeping while searching for his body. Fingal was later found having had his tag switched with someone who was going for a sex-change operation. Taking it in stride, Fingal was later heard saying “I AM INTERFACE!!”

SCORES AFTER ELIMINATION ROUND 1:
Omid: 65
Ganon: 49
Mio: 43
Tim Lister: 43 (X)
Hulk: 30
DukAmok: 24
Heff: 24

Tim Lister challenges Loogaroo to Vertex² (Low-Ball added)
Tim Lister wins by default as Loogaroo fails to pass the song (+5 pts.)
Loogaroo gets his first Strike
– SPOTLIGHT: This was an instance where adding a Lifeline did more harm than good: had Loogaroo only forced Tim to play the song regularly, he would have won as Tim also failed the song, and being the person issuing the challenge would have forfeited the match for failing the song he chose. But since Loogaroo added the Low-Ball Lifeline, that required Loogaroo to pass the song as well. He didn’t even come close, and as a result, he failed the song first and lost by forfeit.

Mio challenges Heff to Zodiac (80% Target added)
Heff wins the song, 79.89 (0.11% off, +5 pts.) to 80.40 (0.40% off, 0 pts.)
Mio gets his second Strike and is eliminated
– SPOTLIGHT: The 80% Target Lifeline made this the most intense match of the tournament before the final round. Each player used a different to close in on the 80% mark, with Heff attempting to consistently score Greats and Decents while Mio used more of a stop-and-go approach. In the end, Heff came out the victor, coming within 3 or 4 Excellents of the 80% target.

Hulk was eliminated and does not get to issue a challenge.

DukAmok challenges Ganon to Soapy Bubble (no Lifelines)
DukAmok wins the song, 99.49 (+15 pts.) to 96.27 (+5 pts.)
Ganon gets his first Strike

FINAL ROUND

Rules: The two finalists are presented with three cards, each with a list of five songs. There is at least one song of each difficulty rating from 9-12, and at least one song with at least one modifier. Each song is worth 10 points to the winner; the first to win three songs is declared champion. Bottom seed vetoes a card, top seed chooses from the two remaining. The actual songs remain a secret until the time comes to play them.

Card 1: Disconnected, Cryosleep, Xuxa, Go 60 Go, Clockwork Genesis (Decel)

Card 2: Amore, Agent Blatant (Expand), Baby Don’t You Want Me (Blink), Destiny, Bloodrush

Card 3: Spaceman, Hybrid, Kagami (Distant, Reverse), Robotix, !

DukAmok vetoed Card #3, Omid selected Card #2.

Song 1: Amore
DukAmok wins the song, 99.2 to 99.11
DukAmok leads the match 1-0

Song 2: Agent Blatant (Expand)
Omid wins the song, 94.54 to 74.53
Match is tied 1-1

Song 3: Baby Don’t You Want Me (Blink)
Omid wins the song, 97.14 to 96.74
Omid leads the match 2-1

Song 4: Destiny
DukAmok wins the song, 99.17 to 98.64
Match is tied 2-2
– SPOTLIGHT: With his back against the wall and needing to win the next song to force it to a tiebreak, DukAmok impressed everybody with his astonishing performance on Destiny, tri-starring the song with a Green flag. The stage was set for an intense battle in the final song – a song that neither of them was expecting.

Song 5: Bloodrush
Omid wins the song, 91.05 to 84.33
Omid wins the match 3-2 and is the EAT IT G 4 champion!!
DukAmok is eliminated in 2nd place
– SPOTLIGHT: What better way to decide a tournament than one of the most intimidating songs in the game? DukAmok was crestfallen to see Bloodrush come up as the final song, having never passed the song without a C-Mod. Although he lost, he still managed to pass the song for the first time ever with a regular speed mod, giving him something he could be very proud of despite being beaten by Omid. The two songs the DukAmok won in the finals constitute the only two songs that Omid lost on throughout the whole tournament.

FINAL STANDINGS:

1st place: Omid ($20 in EA tokens and 5 hours of PC time)
2nd place: DukAmok ($25 Best Buy gift card + $15 Panda Express gift card)
3rd place: Heff (Final Fantasy IV Advance for the GBA)

DukAmok also won the raffle prize: a free entry into one event at EAT 5, coming this July.

Thanks to all who made the trip down to EA and participated in this tournament. Everything went incredibly smoothly, and the other elements that surrounded the event (from the post-tournament dinner at TGI Friday’s to the screening of Overdrawn at the Memory Bank at my house afterward) was extremely fun. You can be sure that another tournament of the same style will be organized sometime during the fall of this year. In the meantime, stay tuned for EAT 5: All You Can EAT!, coming July 21-22 at Electric Ave.!
