OK, this is really starting to annoy me.
I’ve had this computer for about 2 1/2 years. When I got it, I made sure to get a DVD burner with it, so that I could begin transferring some of the 130-some-odd videotapes I have in my dresser to DVDs. Unfortunately, this project has been extremely slow going: so far, I’ve only managed to transfer roughly 4 or 5 tapes worth of stuff (much of which has gone to waste, since the first thing I transferred was my episodes of The Mole which has since been released on DVD anyway). Although it’s been a great deal of help in getting DVDs of stuff I’ve downloaded off of torrents (the SciFi MST3K episodes, seasons 1-4 of Knightmare, series 2 of the UK Mole, etc.)
Fast forward to today. Having realized that I could actually tell my DVD-creating program to record for only a certain period of time, I’ve gone back to work on more tapes (oddly enough, beginning with the tapes that I have my Mole 2 episodes on). Unfortunately, things have not gone as well as planned. My first go-round, the video quality was horrible as a result of the video signal being run through a splitter (which shouldn’t affect the quality that much, but did for some reason – there was a loud hiss going through the whole video clip). I tried again today, running the VCR directly into the capture card, and found out that for some reason, the Line In audio keeps getting de-selected between when I hit the Record button and typing in the file name. I didn’t realize this until I had recorded three episodes and found that all of them had no sound. Gr’aaaaaaaargh.
I’m going to try it again tomorrow, running the tape while I’m working (as I did on my first attempt). I’m really hoping I get this to work this time, because I really don’t want to have to enlist a third party to transfer all this stuff. Not just because it’ll probably be expensive as hell, but also because I would like to have the shows in my collection arranged differently (having episodes of the same show all on 1-2 discs, getting rid of some redundant/unneeded footage, etc.)
In other news, I get Thursdays & Fridays off starting next week. In hindsight, that may not have been a wise decision; Friday is the casino’s busiest day, and as such the day with the biggest likelihood of scoring good tips. Oh well: I’ve been graduating to the better windows over the last few weeks, so hopefully I won’t be so worried about how much I’m making on a day-to-day basis.
