Years ago when the power went out in the evening at home (while my parents were out of town, no less), I called the electric company and informed them of the outage, musing that I hope we’d paid our electric bill on time. The guy on the other end of the line said that they never shut off a person’s electricity for failure to pay the bill as that would be inhumane.

They’ve had a change in policy, it seems.

Not much more to say: Ben & I weren’t able to pay the electric bill on time and they shut off the power yesterday morning. We have since rectified the situation.

If someone in the household has a medical condition that requires a power-related treatment, or if there’s an elderly person or young child in the house, the power company will not shut you off. For example, one of my old roommates kept our power on because he had a doctor’s order requiring him to have AC.
