The good news: NBC is reviving American Gladiators.

The bad news: if BuzzerBlog is to be believed, jet skis are going to be involved. Uh oh.

I’m sorry but I just don’t think AG deserves a revival. I believe it has been tried before as the 1999-01, two-season syndicated series “Battle Dome”. BD was more extreme than AG.

“Our top secret tonight: Gay divorcee Luann Van Houten has been cheating on her boyfriend Pyro… with his best friend Gyro.”

“How many times have I fought beside you, Gyro? And this is how you repay me?!”

This fails logic on so many levels it’s insane. AG deserves a revival of the classic form (that is, the second through fifth seasons). Battle Dome was merely trying to shoehorn AG-ish elements into a WWE environment.

    You LOSE. Good DAY sir.

Yeah, it’s very “yes and no”. To me, the Gladiators format (regardless of nation!) is all about spectacle and (probably as close to Iron Chef-style as to anything else) game show gravitas. Now if they can do interesting and spectacular events outdoors then that could work well. On the other hand, Ice Warriors was an attempt in the UK to do, more or less, Gladiators on ice. Problem is, the games were dull, because there are very few interesting things you can actually do on ice and so there was a considerable degree of repetition. It is not immediately clear whether or not the same problem would necessarily apply to aquatic events, but I’d be prepared to believe it, in a “I must remember not to be prejudiced about game shows before I’ve seen them” fashion.
